What Hail Does to a Sherman Roof

Texas leads the country in hail by a wide margin. In 2025 the state recorded 902 major hail events against 375 for second-placed Kansas, and wind and hail together accounted for roughly 42.5 percent of all homeowners insurance claims nationally in 2023. Around one insured home in thirty-five files a wind or hail claim in a given year. The severe season here peaks hard in April and May, and the same storm systems carry the hail. Severe hail starts at one inch, and functional damage to asphalt shingles generally begins above roughly an inch and a half, with older shingles giving way at smaller sizes.

None of that is visible from the ground, which is the entire problem. An intact-looking roof can have lost enough granule surface to cut years off its remaining life.

What the Storm Assessment Covers

A full record of what the weather actually did, built the way an adjuster reads it.

  • A full-roof hail inspection with test squares

We mark out measured test areas on each slope and count impact marks within them, which is the method an adjuster uses and the reason a report built this way is straightforward for them to evaluate.

  • Dated, located photographs of every finding

Each impact mark, crease and displaced shingle is photographed with a reference for scale and slope, so the record is specific rather than a handful of general roof pictures.

  • Soft-metal impact evidence

Hail leaves clear dents in gutters, downspouts, vents, flashing and roof-mounted equipment. These corroborate the roof findings and help establish the size and direction of the hail that hit your property.

  • Wind damage assessment

Creased shingles, broken seals and missing courses are recorded separately from hail, because they are a different mechanism and are treated differently.

  • Collateral damage survey

Screens, fascia, garage doors, AC condenser fins and skylights are checked, since a hail event rarely affects only the roof.

  • Attic and interior check where accessible

Staining, daylight through the deck and wet insulation are noted, which establishes whether water has already come through.

  • Written condition report

A plain-language summary of what was found on each slope, with the photographs attached, that you can read and use.

  • Line-item repair or replacement estimate

Priced by component rather than as a lump sum, in the level of detail an insurer works from.

  • Emergency tarping where the roof is open

If a storm has left a hole or missing section, we can cover it to stop further water entry while the rest is sorted out.

  • Repair or full replacement once scope is settled

Whichever the damage actually warrants, done by the same crew that documented it.

How a Storm Damage Assessment Works

  1. 1

    The inspection and the documentation

We come out, get on the roof, and work slope by slope with test squares, photographing as we go. It takes around an hour on a typical Sherman house. You get the written report and the photographs whether or not anything comes of it, and whether or not you use us for the work.

  2. 2

    You file with your insurer

This is your claim and your conversation with your carrier. We are not adjusters, and Texas law specifically bars a roofing contractor from acting as one or advertising that it will. What we give you is documentation detailed enough to file with, and a line-item estimate your insurer can evaluate against their own scope. If you would like us on site when the adjuster inspects, we will be there to point out what we found and answer questions about repair method and scope.

  3. 3

    The repair or replacement

Once the scope is settled, we schedule the work. If the damage is localized we repair it; if the field is compromised across multiple slopes we replace it. Either way the price you agreed is the price on the invoice, with the decking rate stated in advance. You will also hear us say plainly that your deductible is yours to pay, because Texas law requires it.

Why Bring Us the Storm Damage

We are still here next season.

After a significant hail event, crews from out of state work the neighborhoods off US 75 and US 82 and are gone within weeks. We live in Grayson County and will be reachable when a warranty question comes up two years from now, which is the point at which the difference actually matters.

The documentation is built the way it needs to be.

Test squares, scale references, slope identification and dated images are not extra effort for its own sake. A vague report and a lump-sum number is the most common reason a legitimate claim stalls, and it is avoidable.

We stay inside the lines, and tell you where they are.

We will document, estimate and meet the adjuster. We will not claim to negotiate your settlement or promise an outcome, because Texas Insurance Code section 4102.163 prohibits a contractor from doing that, and any company promising otherwise is telling you something about how it operates.

Know What the Last Storm Did Before the Next One

Hail damage does not always leak straight away. It strips the granule surface, shortens the shingle's remaining life, and shows up as a failure a year or two later, well after the window for doing anything about it has closed. Getting it recorded now costs nothing.
